About our department
In Neurosurgery, we work in cooperation with Neurology to provide diagnosis and treatment related to surgical treatment for the diseases of the nervous system treated at the Neurological Center. Our department was transferred from Neurosurgery at the Saiseikai Kanagawa Prefectural Hospital, which boasts over any surgeries per year, and aims to provide more advanced treatment by enhancing leading-edge surgical and testing equipment.
Diseases diagnosed Neurosurgery and Neuroendovascular Therapy
脳腫瘍、脳動脈瘤、脳血管奇形、もやもや病、脳出血、頭部外傷、水頭症等の先天性奇形、脳膿瘍等の感染性脳疾患、顔面痙攣や三叉神経痛等の機能的疾患 など
Medical treatment contents and features
For brain tumors, we provide optimal treatment by combining treatment methods
We combine surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy to treat brain tumors, and use a navigation system and neuroendoscope. We also provide leading-edge surgery for difficult-to-remove skull base tumors in collaboration with Keio University. For pituitary tumors, we work with Otorhinolaryngology to perform surgery that puts less strain on the body using a transnasal neuroendoscopic system. We also have Cyberknife stereotactic radiation therapy, which allows us to provide total care in collaboration with Radiation Oncology depending on the type of tumor, such as metastatic tumors and difficult-to-remove skull base tumors. Our hospital also has a Japan Association of Certified Cancer Therapists on staff, and in an era when genetic diagnosis has become essential for diagnosing and treating brain tumors, we also perform genetic analysis in collaboration with Keio University Hospital.
24-hour emergency system
For cerebrovascular disorders, we have a 24-hour emergency system at the Cranial Nerve Center, which consists of our department and the Department of Cerebrovascular and Neurology, and patients with intracerebral hemorrhage or subarachnoid hemorrhage requiring surgery are treated at our department. I will. For ruptured cerebral aneurysms that have caused subarachnoid hemorrhage, Neurosurgery and coil embolization by a cerebrovascular treatment specialist are possible 24 hours a day, and are always available according to the patient's condition. The system allows you to select the appropriate treatment.
For unruptured cerebral aneurysms, we can select the treatment that best suits the patient, such as craniotomy clipping or endovascular treatment (coil embolization, flow diverter treatment, etc.).We also handle all surgical treatments for cerebrovascular disorders, such as bypass surgery for occlusive cerebrovascular disorders and moyamoya disease, and thromboendarterectomy or stent dilatation for cervical internal carotid artery stenosis.
Specialists with high skills in each field will carry out treatment
Neuroendoscopic surgery, such as transnasal endoscopic tumor removal, endoscopic hematoma removal, and endoscopic third ventricle fenestration, is also promoted by neuroendoscopically certified doctors. We also have several endovascular neurosurgeons on staff, and highly specialized treatments such as flow diverter placement and Onyx embolization are also possible.
Neuroendovascular Therapy
Since 2009, the Neuroendovascular Therapy has been established. Endovascular treatment is one of the diversifying treatments for cranial nerve diseases. It is a new surgical method that approaches from inside a blood vessel without cutting the skin or breaking the skull. A catheter is inserted from the base of the foot or the inside of the elbow, and a thinner catheter is advanced to the diseased area to treat the disease using various tools and chemicals. It makes it possible to treat various diseases that were difficult to treat with conventional surgery and that were highly invasive.
When a cerebral aneurysm ruptures, it causes subarachnoid hemorrhage, so surgery is performed to prevent hemorrhage. Traditionally, the first choice was a surgery called clipping, in which the head is opened and a clip is placed at the base of the cerebral aneurysm. In endovascular treatment, a flexible coil is placed inside the cerebral aneurysm via a microcatheter to block the affected area. Treatment is also possible when clipping is difficult due to deep aneurysms or complications. However, clipping may be recommended depending on the shape of the affected area. A specialist will determine the best treatment method for each individual.
At our hospital, endovascular cerebrovascular treatment specialists are actively performing endovascular treatments such as stent placement for cervical carotid artery stenosis, which has been approved for insurance coverage since April 2008, stent placement for subclavian artery, PTA for intracranial vascular stenosis, and embolization for brain tumors, dura mater, and cerebral vascular malformations. The catheters, coils, and other tools used in surgery have evolved remarkably in recent years, and the range of diseases that can be treated is expanding. Flow diverter treatment, leading-edge treatment for unruptured cerebral aneurysms, is also available at our hospital, and we perform approximately 20 cases of this treatment per year. In addition, by having a 24-hour emergency system, we are also actively performing cerebral thrombectomy for hyperacute cerebral infarction.
