Public lecture on osteoporosis held
On Wednesday, February 7th, we held a public lecture entitled "Understanding Osteoporosis from the Ground Up!" in our hospital's auditorium.
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many people attended the event every year, and this year was the first time the event was held in the hospital in four years, so we would like to thank all 84 people who attended!
At the beginning of the lecture, Dr. Kentaro Fukuda, Director of the Bone Metabolism Center, gave a speech in which he spoke about the large number of potential osteoporosis patients and the low screening rates, as well as the importance of health promotion, maintenance, and awareness-raising efforts like this lecture.
The course included three lectures by members of the Bone and Metabolism Center. The first was "What you need to know about osteoporosis" by Dr. Fumiko Kasahara, who explained in an easy-to-understand manner what osteoporosis is, how bone metabolism works, what to do if you develop osteoporosis, and how to prevent it.
Next up was Registered Nurse Yu Muroichi, who gave a talk entitled "Today's Chewy Nutrients Necessary for Bones," in which she asked the audience which nutrients they thought were good for bones, and introduced the most common nutrients, calcium and vitamin D. She also talked about the importance of sunbathing and a balanced diet.
The final session was "Everyday bone-knock exercises! Building a body that won't fall" by Physical Therapist Ayano Utsumi. Based on the surprising information that about 70% of elderly people fall at home, she did daily bone-knock exercises with the participants. Some of the exercises were simple, such as raising your arms and straightening your knees, and could be done while sitting down.
After the lecture, there was a question and answer session, during which staff from the Bone Metabolism Center answered questions from the audience.
This course also included a simple bone density test, which must be booked in advance.
We hope you will incorporate what you have learned in this course into your daily life and live a lively life!

In addition to providing osteoporosis treatment to our patients, we also conduct educational activities such as this public lecture. In addition, we also provide "Tobu Gohan" meals, which were created by our Clinical Dietitian in collaboration with the hospital staff cafeteria.
